President of Republic of Croatia Stjepan Mesić received John O'Donoghue, speaker of the Lower House of the Irish Parliament.
During the talks, President Mesić informed Mr.O'Donoghue on the state of Croatia's EU entry negotiations and a halt caused by Slovenia'a blockade of the membership talks.
The Speaker of the Lower House of the Irish Parliament explained the reasons why the Treaty of Lisbon had been rejected at a referendum in Ireland, expressing confidence that the document would receive the necessary majority at a new referendum scheduled for October. What is important to realize, Mr.O'Donoghue stressed, is that the reasons why the Treaty of Lisbon was rejected in Ireland had nothing to do with Croatia's EU entry because Ireland is very interested in seeing Croatia join the Union as soon as possible.
