Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, who was on Thursday participating in the World Scientific Forum which takes place biannually in Budapest, called for joint action against everything that destroys the environment and undermines human beings' existence.
Addressing this year's forum focusing on the topic "Knowledge and Future", President Mesic said that it could not be denied that the environment was being destroyed. It is high time that we, in cooperation with science and know-how, opposed to those who are devastating our environment and thus undermining the basis of our existence, the Croatian head of state said. We must became aware that their is something which can be called mutual interest, President Mesic said calling for mustering all the potentials in the struggle against the destruction of our planet. He said that environment protection would in short term negatively affect national economies but that profits would be long-term. President Mesic called on participants in the Budapest forum to send a clear message to the forthcoming United Nations conference in Copenhagen on climate change. In 2012 the Kyoto protocol expires and the Copenhagen gathering should decide on next moves.
