The President of the Republic and Commander in Chief of the Croatian Armed Forces Zoran Milanovi\u0107 attended the formal send-off of the 5th <\/sup>Croatian Contingent to NATO\u2019s \u201cOperation Sea Guardian\u201d, peace support mission, in the Mediterranean comprised of the RTOP \u2013 41 \u201cVukovar\u201c ship and  crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his address in the Fleet Admiral Sveto Letica-Barba\u201c barracks in Split, President Milanovi\u0107 underscored the significance of the sea and the area in which we live. \u201cThe sea and this small area have invaluable importance, both symbolic and material, for Croatian history, Croatian existence, the Croatian name and spirit, and everything else that led to the creation of the Croatian state\u201d, President Milanovi\u0107 noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Croatian Armed Forces have their air force component soon to get excellent modern equipment. They have land forces, an army that for the most part led a war of liberation. However, every nation has something that particularly stands out, something that represents that extra thread in its identity. For us Croats, it is the sea\u201d, the President underlined, adding that many states and nations have a sea, but the Croats are the only Slavic nation that isn\u2019t what it is without the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many other nations have a sea, however, it means much less to them and it determines them less than us. Here where we are presently standing, if we focus our eyes, we can see places where literally the Croatian state and the Croatian identity were born, forged, and conceived. All this took place in the ninth century, and somewhat earlier, and in the tenth century, it took place in this exact area. This is Croatia! Without this area, without these monuments, without the closeness of the sea at which our ancestors probably looked in awe not suspecting that it would one day become a nation of seafarers, where they didn\u2019t come as seamen, but became seamen ultimately. Croatia without its sea is not Croatia. Nor is Croatia without Vukovar, without Zagreb, without Istria, without Knin. These thousand and more kilometers and miles of airspace, of sea, and even more of coastline, is what Croatia defended, what was attacked, what was the object of envy and greed, and annexation of land by others. Today we live in peace, and for this peace to be lasting you acquire new knowledge, new skills, new experience that I believe you will never have to use\u201d, the President said in concluding his address. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attending the formal send-off besides the President of the Republic were Defense Minister Mario Bano\u017ei\u0107, the Chief of the General Staff of the Croatian Armed Forces Admiral Robert Hranj, the commander of the Croatian Navy Rear Admiral Ivo Raffanelli and the commander of the \u201cSea Guardian\u201d contingent Lieutenant Commander Marinko Maji\u0107. Alongside President Milanovi\u0107 was the Adviser to the President for Defense and National Security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
