The President of the Republic and Commander in Chief of the Croatian Armed Forces Zoran Milanovi\u0107 visited Sinj, where he attended a ceremony marking the 30th<\/sup> anniversary of the formation of the 126th<\/sup> Sinj Brigade of the Croatian Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGatherings such as this are less and less for your and our generation, and more for those who were born in \u201891 or who were not yet born. They have not seen (war) and what they know, they have learned from us and from others who pass on information to them in various ways. It is up to us to fight for the truth. The truth can hurt, but the truth is better than lies \u2013 always, even when it\u2019s painful. But our truth is not painful, your truth is something you can be proud of,\u201d said President Milanovi\u0107 in his address at the ceremony. He added that attempts were made to avoid war and this should always be emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President of the Republic reminded that a small number of people defended Croatia during the Homeland War. \u201cThese seven thousand who passed through your brigade during the entire course of the war, especially those who showed up first when it was hardest and most dangerous, are people who deserve deepest respect. Croatia was defended by several thousand people. It is a special, elite status. Keep that status and guard it jealously. It is yours and no one else\u2019s \u2013 yours, because the country could not have been organized then, as it had nothing to organize itself with. You have organized yourself largely on your own and for this I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all of you,\u201d said President Milanovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThirty years later, we have a state that lacks nothing. Overall, I am satisfied. Divisions in society are present, but they have never resulted in street violence, disorder or anarchy. It doesn\u2019t exist and has never existed in Croatia. We live surrounded by countries that have not yet consolidated themselves. We are sending them messages of peace \u2013 not naive peace, but benevolent messages. We know where we are \u2013 we are a Western civilization. With all due respect for those who are different, and acceptance of those who are different, we have found our place,\u201d said President Milanovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President added that we knew exactly what we wanted from the outset. \u201cIt is no small thing and in the Croatian political nation, to which everyone who wishes and acts in good faith belongs, this was not contested. For a nation, this is a great asset that we take for granted. What will happen to our neighbours to the east? If they want to become members of the European Union, they will have to behave according to certain rules of conduct. We do not expect anyone to repent and kneel, but it is also not easy to hear that just about everyone is a victim except for the Croatian people, who made sacrifices. I am the President of all citizens, but I am also the President of the Croatian people and I have to look at things objectively, although at the same time I am partial. I will represent Croatia following this line of thinking, both in Homeland War matters and in matters having to do with your pride and your status \u2013 as dictated by that human experience, fundamental, plain human honour and understanding of the surroundings and the world in which I live. That\u2019s all,\u201d President Milanovi\u0107 continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDear heroes, defenders of the Cetina region, thank you for everything you have done and given, especially in \u201991, because that was a time for special people, for a small number of real people. When other people more or less lived their normal lives as citizens, you were exposed to danger and fear for your own life and your future on a daily basis, spending it on Mount Dinara so that others could live normally today. And that is a fact that no one who is honest will hide. Croatia\u2019s debt to its defenders is simply huge,\u201d concluded President Milanovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For bravery and heroism displayed in the Homeland War by its members, the President of the Republic Zoran Milanovi\u0107 decorated the 126th<\/sup> Sinj Brigade of the Croatian Army with the Order of Duke Domagoj with Ribbon. The decoration was accepted by Ante Kotromanovi\u0107, one of the commanders of the 126th<\/sup> Sinj Brigade of the Croatian Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the occasion of the 30th<\/sup> anniversary of the formation of the 126th<\/sup> Sinj Brigade of the Croatian Army, the President of the Republic and Commander in Chief of the Croatian Armed Forces laid a wreath and lit a candle at the Monument to Croatian defenders who were killed in the Homeland War. Special Adviser to the President of the Republic for Homeland War Veterans Marijan Marekovi\u0107, Mayor of Sinj Miro Bulj and President of the Croatian Defenders\u2019 Association \u201c126th<\/sup> Sinj Brigade Veterans\u201d Bo\u0161ko Vladovi\u0107 were alongside President Milanovi\u0107 at the wreath laying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
