The President of the Republic Zoran Milanovi\u0107 attended an award presentation ceremony for the best athletes of the City of Zagreb in 2021, traditionally hosted by the \u201cSportski savez Grada Zagreba\u201d (Sports Federation of the City of Zagreb).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congratulating the best athletes on their achievements, awards and recognitions, President Milanovi\u0107 stated that coaches are people without whom there can be no success. \u201cWe owe those people many thanks as well as to all those who made great efforts, had no money yet made it to the Olympics, competed, didn\u2019t reap medals, who were within easy reach in difficult sports, with small scholarships and small financial resources. Those are wonders which inspire\u201d, President Milanovi\u0107 stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that in sports and in life ten percent accounts for talent, and ninety percent comes from hard work. It\u2019s good to teach this to children, but reality is somewhat different. \u201cTo be born without a talent at sports isn\u2019t good, but it\u2019s good to teach children that hard work is more important than talent. Society organizes what it can, the City of Zagreb has money, it\u2019s a rich city. I know it\u2019s not easy and I\u2019m sure you will help those who have no money, which is the majority\u201d, President Milanovi\u0107 said in concluding his address, adding that \u201cthere was no life in this city without sports and the city has always lived for sports\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Milanovi\u0107 presented the award for the best sports crew \u2013 Martin and Valent Sinkovi\u0107, rowing men\u2019s pair winning who won their second Olympic gold in Tokyo this year. Besides being Olympic winners, the Sinkovi\u0107 brothers were European champions this year for the fifth time, and since the category for the most successful pair, crew or relay has been introduced in 2015 by the \u201cSportski savez Grada Zagreba\u201d, brothers Martin and Valent Sinkovi\u0107 have been the only ones to win it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Special recognitions of the Sports Federation of the City of Zagreb were presented to the following best athletes with disabilities: An\u0111ela Mu\u017eini\u0107 Vinceti\u0107 and Helena Dretar Kari\u0107, and discus thrower Ivan Katanu\u0161i\u0107. Annual awards for outstanding results and sports activities were presented to: the Zagreba\u010dki sveu\u010dili\u0161ni \u0161portski savez, judo player Lara Cvjetko, swimmer Mirela Karda\u0161evi\u0107, karate player An\u0111elo Kvesi\u0107 and rower Damir Martin. Special recognitions for Olympic medals were presented to: Nikola Mekti\u0107, Marin \u010cili\u0107 and Ivan Dodig. A trophy for lifetime achievement was presented to: the Kajak kanu klub Zagreb \u2013 Olympic winner Matija Marini\u0107, Branka Trzun-Makek, \u017deljko Gobec, Mato \u0160ebalj and Drago Dikli\u0107. Special recognitions were presented for best coaches: Nikola Brali\u0107 (coach of Valent and Martin Sinkovi\u0107), Lucijan Krce (coach of Tin Srbi\u0107), Sre\u0107ko \u0160uk (coach of Damir Martin), Roland Varga (coach of Ivan Katanu\u0161i\u0107) and Mirela \u0160ikoronja Ivan\u010din (coach of An\u0111ela Mu\u017eini\u0107 Vinceti\u0107 and Helena Dretar Kari\u0107).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best women\u2019s team was Lokomotiva Handball Club \u2013 finalists of the EHF Europe Cup 2020-2021, winners of the Republic of Croatia Cup, and have qualified for the EHF European League 2021-2022. The best men\u2019s team was Dinamo Zagreb Citizens\u2019 Football Club, champion of Croatia, winner of the Croatian Cup, quarterfinalists of the European League 2020-2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best female athlete is Lucija Lesjak, bronze medal winner in the +68 kg category at the Karate World Championships as well as the bronze medal in the team event at the European Championships. Best male athlete is Tin Srbi\u0107, member of the Zagreb Gymnastics Club \u201cHrvatski sokol\u201d, winner of the silver medal in the men\u2019s horizontal bar at the Olympic Games and overall World Cup winner in the men\u2019s horizontal bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside President Milanovi\u0107 at the award presentation ceremony was the Commissioner of the President for Sports \u017deljko Jovanovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
