During his official visit to the Swiss Confederation, the President of the Republic Zoran Milanovi\u0107 and his wife Sanja Musi\u0107 Milanovi\u0107 visited CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, which is the world\u2019s largest laboratory for particle physics located on the French-Swiss border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While at CERN, President Milanovi\u0107 met with its leadership. The activities of CERN were presented to President Milanovi\u0107 at a meeting attended by the Director-General of CERN Fabiola Gianotti, Director for Accelerators and Technology Mike Lamont, Director for Research and Computing Joachim Mnich, Director for Finance and Human Resources Raphael Bello, Director for International Relations Charlotte Warakaulle and Adviser for Relations with Associate Member States J\u00e9r\u020fme Pierlot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accompanied by the host, President Milanovi\u0107 also visited the underground experimental area of CERN. The European Organization for Nuclear Research was established by the European Council for Nuclear Research and it is governed by 20 countries. CERN employs some 2,500 people, and about 8,000 scientists from 580 institutions around the world use its facilities to conduct research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Republic of Croatia became a CERN Associate Member State in February 2019, which enabled it to equally participate in CERN-funded projects and gave Croatian scientists access to first-rate education and research. After touring the underground experimental area, President Milanovi\u0107 met with Croatian scientists and students who work at CERN, thereby ending his two-day official visit to the Swiss Confederation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
