{"id":16754,"date":"2022-04-27T20:45:00","date_gmt":"2022-04-27T18:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.predsjednik.hr\/?post_type=news&#038;p=16754"},"modified":"2022-04-28T10:47:33","modified_gmt":"2022-04-28T08:47:33","slug":"president-milanovic-attends-unveiling-of-monument-to-victims-of-the-holocaust-and-ustasha-regime","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.predsjednik.hr\/en\/news\/president-milanovic-attends-unveiling-of-monument-to-victims-of-the-holocaust-and-ustasha-regime\/","title":{"rendered":"President Milanovi\u0107 Attends Unveiling of Monument to Victims of the Holocaust and Ustasha Regime"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The President of the Republic Zoran Milanovi\u0107 attended the unveiling of a monument to the victims of the Holocaust and the Ustasha regime, erected at the central railway station in Zagreb on the occasion of Holocaust Martyrs\u2019 and Heroes\u2019 Remembrance Day Yom Hashoah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The monument was erected in memory of the 30,000 Jews killed in the Holocaust in the Independent State of Croatia, as well as the numerous victims of other genocides and mass atrocities committed by the Ustasha regime and the Third Reich. It was jointly unveiled by the \u201clast boy\u201d from Auschwitz, Oleg Mandi\u0107, and the Mayor of the City of Zagreb, Tomislav Toma\u0161evi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The City of Zagreb published, implemented and financed the tender and the construction of the monument to pay lasting gratitude and respects to all people of Zagreb who were killed during the Holocaust and the Ustasha regime of the Independent State of Croatia. Namely, in August 1942 about 800 Zagreb Jews were deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp from the point at Zagreb\u2019s central railway station where the monument was erected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thirty-eight works were submitted to the tender. The jury, chaired by Branko Lustig, selected the work of sculptor Dalibor Sto\u0161i\u0107 and architect Kre\u0161imir Rogina entitled \u2018Present Absence\u2019.
