{"id":16811,"date":"2022-04-29T15:14:54","date_gmt":"2022-04-29T13:14:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.predsjednik.hr\/?post_type=news&#038;p=16811"},"modified":"2022-04-29T15:14:57","modified_gmt":"2022-04-29T13:14:57","slug":"president-milanovic-at-commemoration-for-ivica-racan-honesty-in-politics-is-important","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.predsjednik.hr\/en\/news\/president-milanovic-at-commemoration-for-ivica-racan-honesty-in-politics-is-important\/","title":{"rendered":"President Milanovi\u0107 at Commemoration for Ivica Ra\u010dan: Honesty in politics is important"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The President of the Republic Zoran Milanovi\u0107 attended a commemoration on the 15<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the death of former Croatian Prime Minister and Social Democratic Party (SDP) President Ivica Ra\u010dan, whom he described as a man with a strong character who was fair and honest \u2013 a \u201cgood guy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe was honest, he held together the SDP, my party, our party, which made a politician out of me, because without it and without him I would not be one. Honesty is important but it is not a guarantor of success in politics. It often guarantees that others will ridicule you, consider you weak, inconsistent and incoherent. But, that party truly lived such a life and functioned that way. It is like that today. Today, I cannot speak with the enthusiasm and passion with which I spoke all these years. I can only wish for the SDP and all other parties to be more honest, as Ivica Ra\u010dan was, for it to be a party of people who can be described using the words \u2018good guy\u2019 \u2013 that was my impression of Ra\u010dan,\u201d President Milanovi\u0107 said, describing the former Croatian Prime Minister and President of the SDP, who passed away on 29 April 2007 after battling a serious illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Milanovi\u0107 also recalled the moment when Ivica Ra\u010dan informed him that he was ill. \u201cThere was no drama, despair or existential panic, nothing. \u2018Listen, I have cancer. I\u2019m leaving now and I\u2019ll see you\u2019. And every day after that, and after I scored some political victories, not a day went by that I didn\u2019t think \u2013 if it wasn\u2019t for him\u2026 what he created and the way he made room for all of us, for me in particular, there wouldn\u2019t be me, either,\u201d said the President, adding that Ivica Ra\u010dan was a fighter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat would Ivica think today of a Europe that has changed? There are no more great social democratic or great Christian democratic and people\u2019s parties. What he considered to be the standard, a pattern according to which Europe breathes and pulsates no longer exists. What would he think about the war in Ukraine, about the Russian attack on Ukraine? He would certainly not be one-dimensional and he would certainly not copy from Russian propaganda or from hysterical British conservative tabloids. He would have his own view of the situation and consider it thoroughly,\u201d President Milanovi\u0107 emphasized, concluding that fifteen years ago the departure of Ivica Ra\u010dan meant \u201cthe departure of a leader of a major party, in a small country still struggling for its status, which it achieved harder than others. Let\u2019s not forget that Ivica was a good guy, that\u2019s what\u2019s most important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from President Milanovi\u0107 and SDP President Pe\u0111a Grbin, former President of Slovenia Milan Ku\u010dan also spoke at the commemoration.
