The President of the Republic Zoran Milanovi\u0107 joined today residents in the northern city of Vara\u017edin and their guests at the traditional festivity held on the occasion of International Workers\u2019 Day, which is celebrated on the 1st<\/sup> of May, from where he extended his congratulations on International Workers\u2019 Day to all Croatian citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a two-year break due to the pandemic, a May Day celebration with more than 150 participants was held at the Vara\u017edin picnic area on the Drava River. The event was organized by the City of Vara\u017edin and the Vara\u017edin Tourist Board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe unions once went \u2018bone to bone\u2019, \u2018iron to iron\u2019 to the big employers. Now it\u2019s dispersed and the unions are waging some kind of hybrid war because their rivals, the employers, are dispersed on many more positions. It\u2019s more difficult to be a unionist than ever and a worker is someone who lives off their pay. Inflation affects such people the most. Food and energy prices are increasing the most,\u201d said President Milanovi\u0107, commenting on workers\u2019 rights in Croatia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this respect, he added that the situation is quite serious \u201cnot only in Croatia but also in Germany, France and the USA. This has much less to do with workers\u2019 rights and much more with geopolitics and the systemic global policy,\u201d said President Milanovi\u0107, adding that he chose to celebrate May Day in Vara\u017edin because it is one of the largest events of its kind in Croatia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accompanied by the Mayor of Vara\u017edin Neven Bosilj and his associates, President Milanovi\u0107 attended the event programme after which he fired the traditional May Day cannon, by pulling a cord, next to the lined-up Vara\u017edin Civil Guard \u201cPurgari.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Head of the Cabinet of the President of the Republic Bartol \u0160imuni\u0107 and Special Adviser to the President of the Republic for the Economy Velibor Ma\u010dki\u0107 were alongside President Milanovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
