The President of the Republic Zoran Milanovi\u0107 attended tonight the opening of the 10th<\/sup>  edition of Be\u0107arfest, a festival featuring the be\u0107arac <\/em>folk song singing and playing of Slavonia, Baranya and Syrmia organised as part of the three-day event \u201cNema sela nad Babine Grede.\u201d The jubilee was held under the auspices of President Milanovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the opening of the Be\u0107arfest festival, President Milanovi\u0107 said he had come to listen to the performers and custodians of Croatian heritage. \u201cMy dear friends, the \u0160okci from our beautiful Slavonian, Croatian \u0160okadija. We have come here to listen to the performers, the custodians of the heritage of our people, our centuries-old heritage. I have come here with joy and pleasure and I will come again given some luck and time, and I will do my best to find it. I hereby declare Be\u0107arfest open. Stay healthy and merry. Long live Babina Greda! Long live the Croatian \u0160okadija!\u201d, President Milanovi\u0107 told those present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNema sela nad Babine Grede\u201d [There is no village above Babina Greda] is a culinary and cultural event that lasts for three days in June, and the Be\u0107arfest festival evening is its central celebration. The goal of the event is to preserve, pass on and present the most popular melody of this region \u2013 the be\u0107arac<\/em>, which is on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. This year, Be\u0107arfest is being held for the 10th<\/sup> time and traditionally gathers men\u2019s and women\u2019s tamburitza ensembles from the local county and the wider area. The traditional event \u201cKonji bijelci\u201d [White Horses] is also held during the three-day celebration in Babina Greda. Adviser to the President of the Republic for Human Rights and Civil Society Melita Muli\u0107 and Special Adviser to the President of the Republic for Homeland War Veterans Marijan Marekovi\u0107 were in the company of President Milanovi\u0107 in the community of Babina Greda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
