The President of the Republic and Commander in Chief of the Croatian Armed Forces Zoran Milanovi\u0107 attended a celebration marking Homeland War Defenders Day in the City of Kri\u017eevci and the 31st<\/sup> anniversary of the liberation of the former Yugoslav Army barracks \u201cKalnik\u201d and the \u201c\u0160iroko Bre\u017eje\u201d ammunition warehouse in Kri\u017eevci.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Milanovi\u0107 says it important to mark Defenders Day and anniversaries commemorating the liberation of the former barracks and ammunition warehouses in Kri\u017eevci and similar anniversaries throughout Croatia because \u201cin a certain way it counters attempts to impose a new narrative\u201d. In this regard he said that we must never get tired of proving certain things. \u201cThat we were attacked and that we didn\u2019t want war. The war broke out and nobody helped us. What you captured in Kri\u017eevci, what you have sacrificed \u2013 37 lives is a huge contribution for a city of this size \u2013 that must never be forgotten\u201d, President Milanovi\u0107 stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen we were attacked nobody came to our aid. Month after month, year after year there was suspicion, blackmail, threats of sanctions. Our army had no ammunition, in liberating operations in 1994 and 1995 our army acted like a good host, knowing how much ammunition it had in its warehouses and that it wouldn\u2019t last long\u201d, President Milanovi\u0107 said, underlining that we shouldn\u2019t forget and stop repeating that \u201cthe Croatian Army liberated Bosnia and Herzegovina, the country where today local Croats are being denied their basic rights in a thievish way. Without the Croatian Army \u2013not the American, French and British bombers \u2013 the Serbian army of Karad\u017ei\u0107 and Mladi\u0107 would never have agreed to lay down arms, sit at the negotiating table and accept Dayton. Maybe Dayton has no connection with Kri\u017eevci, but this whole story definitely has a connection. Therefore, he who proves too much \u2013 is doing a good job\u201d, the President said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, he said that we must not forget a further lesson that is important for Croatian history, and that is \u2013 when the big ones are fighting, the small ones don\u2019t go under the table, but back away and wait for their chance. \u201cWe paid the bills for others for too long, the idea of the historical right to a state that was never forgotten, never disappeared in negotiations with all possible foreign masters \u2013 that is also something that must be preserved relentlessly, faithfully, stubbornly and never let Croatia become an office of Brussels commissars because all commissars are bad, those from Brussels are better than those from Moscow and Belgrade, but we do not have to accept that way of thinking,” President Milanovi\u0107 said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On this occasion he repeated that Croatia defended itself in the Homeland War. \u201cNobody gave us anything. We must repeat this time and time again even to those who don\u2019t wish to hear it, to those whose wives and children even husbands Croatia saved in the nineties by the tens of thousands \u2013 in Croatian cities, hotels \u2013 and who today don\u2019t even want to say thank you but say that you are part of a joint criminal enterprise. As a Croatian man, a left-oriented politician, a liberal one, I\u2019m fed up with that!\u201d, President Milanovi\u0107 concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the occasion of Homeland War Defenders Day in the City of Kri\u017eevci and the 31st<\/sup> anniversary of the liberation of the former Yugoslav Army barracks \u201cKalnik\u201d and the \u201c\u0160iroko Bre\u017eje\u201d ammunition warehouse, the President of the Republic and Commander in Chief of the Croatian Armed Forces bestowed the Order of the Croatian Trefoil for outstanding service to the Republic of Croatia upon Mate Babi\u0107, \u017deljko Bero\u0161 and Mladen Boltek, and the Order of the Croatian Interlace for outstanding contribution to the development and reputation of the Republic of Croatia and the well-being of its citizens upon Damir \u010ceri\u0107, Neboj\u0161a Parazajda and Darko Pukec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his stay in Kri\u017eevci the President of the Republic toured the \u201cMemorial Room to the Croatian Defenders\u201d in the \u201cFranjo Markovi\u0107\u201d City Library, and laid a wreath at a memorial to the Croatian defenders \u201cPonos branitelja \u2013 u znaku kri\u017ea\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside President Milanovi\u0107 was the Special Adviser to the President for Homeland War Veterans Marijan Marekovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
