The President of the Republic and Commander in Chief of the Croatian Armed Forces Zoran Milanovi\u0107 today bestowed decorations upon veterans of the Homeland War. At a ceremony held in the Office of the President, decorations were presented to the defenders of Dubrovnik, war volunteers and members of the Croatian Navy, members of the 156th<\/sup> Brigade from Makarska and members of the 15th<\/sup> Anti-tank Artillery Division from Kri\u017eevci. Lieutenant Colonel Darko Banjeglav, a member of the 105th<\/sup> Brigade and 52nd<\/sup> Home Guard Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Tihomil \u017diger, a war physician, and Tomislav \u0160timac, a member of the 204th<\/sup> Brigade, were also decorated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou come from two areas of Croatia, from the coast and the continental part, but what unites us is the memory of the glorious days when, more than thirty years ago, a small number of people defended Croatia,\u201d President Milanovi\u0107 said in his address. He said that, despite the fact that thirty years have passed since the Homeland War, some things are becoming clearer than they were then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur task is to preserve the memory of the truth \u2013 and the truth was mostly pure and good for us \u2013 not to lose it, to cherish it\u2026 not as propaganda, but as a debt of honor towards what you gave, as did those who are not here today, in order for Croatia to defend itself,\u201d said President Milanovi\u0107, adding that Croatia was defending itself then in very difficult conditions, without international aid and under an embargo, and \u201cwithout gratitude for what Croatia has done not only for itself, but also for the region and some others, who after thirty years want to settle scores and do not want to see the obvious,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have a state that has been rounded off as a historical project, a historical mission that generations of our people thought about and hoped to accomplish. You participated in it with your heart, taking big risks when things were uncertain and when nothing was guaranteed. It had to be fought for, and there was little help from outside Croatia. This makes your merit and contribution greater,\u201d President Milanovi\u0107 concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a deed of valour in the Homeland War, the Order of Nikola \u0160ubi\u0107 Zrinski was bestowed upon Darko Banjeglav. The Order of Ban Jela\u010di\u0107 was presented to Professor Dr. Tihomil \u017diger for extraordinary services in the organization and command of the medical service of the 67th<\/sup> Military Police Battalion. For being seriously wounded in the Homeland War, the Order of the Croatian Cross was awarded to Luka Vuleti\u0107, while \u017deljko \u0110uratovi\u0107, \u017deljko Ba\u0161ica, Sini\u0161a Ba\u010di\u0107, Ivica Mari\u0107 and Risto Kure\u0161 were posthumously decorated with the Order of the Croatian Trefoil for extraordinary services to the Republic of Croatia in a state of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following individuals were also decorated with the Order of the Croatian Trefoil: Mato Bari\u0161i\u0107, Dobroslav Kosti\u0107, Ivica Matija\u0161, Miho Pejdar, Fabijan Vuki\u0107, Petar Srijemsi, Lovorko Kle\u0161kovi\u0107, Marin Lale, Ivica Matijevi\u0107, Ante Radi\u0107, Stojan Krki\u0107, Vlaho Radi\u010devi\u0107, Milenko \u0160are, Bruno Tomi\u010di\u0107, Jerko Mikuli\u0107, Nik\u0161a Iveta, \u017deljko \u010cotra, Vlaho Obradovi\u0107, Dragan Klepo, Neven Stjepovi\u0107, Matko Andrija\u0161evi\u0107, Ivan Glibota, Igor Filipeti, Dalibor Kati\u0107, Stjepan Kotarac, Nenad Radojkovi\u0107, Mirko Prani\u0107, Stanko Primorac, Stevo Mladenovi\u0107, Stjepan Belu\u0161i\u0107, Milan \u010corak, \u017deljko Knapi\u0107, Zrinko Grgani\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tomislav \u0160timac was presented with the Order of the Croatian Interlace for extraordinary contributions to the development and standing of the Republic of Croatia, and to the welfare of its citizens, as well as with the Homeland War Memorial Medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expressing his gratitude for the decorations, Mr. Darko Banjeglava said that the decorations that were conferred testify to their righteousness and the fact that the sacrifice and \u201cpain, injuries and lives of many\u201d were not in vain. \u201cEven today, as we strive to keep the truth from being forgotten, we know that this is the price we had to pay, as we dreamed and fought for a free Croatia. This act also promotes the truth about the value of the Homeland War, embedded in the foundations of the modern Croatian state, and cherishes the memory of the sacrifice of every Croatian and all those who kept Croatia in their hearts,\u201d said Mr. Banjeglava.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Except for the decorated Croatian veterans and members of their families, the award ceremony was attended by the President of the Association of the 156th<\/sup> Brigade of the Croatian Army Stjepan Kotarac, President of the Croatian Navy Association of Dubrovnik \u017delimir \u010cizmi\u0107, President of the 15th<\/sup> mixed anti-tank Artillery Division of Kri\u017eevci \u017deljko Topolovec and the mayors of Kri\u017eevci and Makarska Mario Rajn and Dr. Zoran Paunovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Milanovi\u0107 was accompanied at the ceremony by the Chief of the General Staff of the Croatian Armed Forces Admiral Robert Hranj, Special Adviser to the President of the Republic for Homeland War Veterans Marijan Marekovi\u0107, Adviser to the President of the Republic for Defense Ivica Oluji\u0107, Adviser to the President of the Republic for National Security Dragan Lozan\u010di\u0107, Head of the Military Office in the Cabinet For Defense and National Security in the Office of the President Rear Admiral Predrag Stipanovi\u0107, Aide-de-Camp to the President of the Republic Colonel Vlado \u010culina and the NCO for IT support of the Military Office in the Cabinet for Defense and National Security Sergeant Major Hrvoje Kraja\u010di\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
