{"id":23636,"date":"2023-05-26T12:10:48","date_gmt":"2023-05-26T10:10:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.predsjednik.hr\/?post_type=news&#038;p=23636"},"modified":"2023-05-26T12:10:52","modified_gmt":"2023-05-26T10:10:52","slug":"president-milanovic-at-sofia-university-a-federal-eu-is-a-fallacy-that-i-will-oppose","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.predsjednik.hr\/en\/news\/president-milanovic-at-sofia-university-a-federal-eu-is-a-fallacy-that-i-will-oppose\/","title":{"rendered":"President Milanovi\u0107 at Sofia University: A federal EU is a fallacy that I will oppose"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The President of the Republic Zoran Milanovi\u0107 gave a lecture to students today at St. Kliment Ohridski University in Sofia, in which he said that he would oppose the concept of the European Union becoming a federation, assessing it as a \u201cdelusion.\u201d In his lecture entitled \u201cGeopolitics and Economics,\u201d President Milanovi\u0107 criticized the concept of a federal Europe, emphasizing that most officials in EU institutions are federalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u201cI will be the first to oppose it,\u201d said President Milanovi\u0107. He assessed such an \u201cunsustainable\u201d idea as a \u201cdelusion, a self-illusion\u201d that contradicts European history. \u201cAlthough I am European by sentiment, you are Bulgarians and I am a Croat. I was never raised as a nationalist, or \u2013 God forbid \u2013 as a chauvinist, but in Europe there is nothing higher than the nation state,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Contrary to the federalists, the President considers himself a \u201crealist\u201d on matters of European integration. He pointed out that \u201cit remains to be seen\u201d whether Croatia\u2019s membership in the European Union can be deemed a success, noting that in the ten years of EU membership the Croatian economy did not grow faster than the economies of Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina. \u201cIn terms of growth and created wealth, the first ten years can hardly be characterized as an incredible success, if it is a success at all,\u201d he underscored. Ahead of the lecture, President Milanovi\u0107 met with St. Kliment Ohridski University Rector Anastas Gerdjikov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>A Croatian language lectorate is based at St. Kliment Ohridski University\u2019s Department of Slavic Languages.
