\u201cThe care and awareness in Croatia that what you did was great and not repeated is not only not stopping but is, I deeply feel and notice, deeper and deeper and stronger and stronger among our people. Some disagreements, dilemmas and doubts we had about ourselves for a reason, very often without a reason under external pressure, have fallen into place in the meantime. And I think that now we all know together what was good \u2013 that\u2019s almost everything, what was not good \u2013 some things, and what was bad \u2013 there is that, too, but there was little of it and a high price was paid for it,\u201d the President of the Republic and Commander in Chief of the Croatian Armed Forces Zoran Milanovi\u0107 told Croatian defenders from the Homeland War at a ceremony in the Office of the President, where he presented them with decorations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSoon it will be 30 years since the final military operations for the liberation of Croatia. Croatia was defended in 1991 and in 1992, and finally liberated in 1995,\u201d said President Milanovi\u0107, adding that today, 30 years later, we can reflect on this, analyse and conclude some things. \u201cAs a state and society, we have made progress in many things and regressed in some things, but the path you have treaded, which was cleared thanks to you, has been unique,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Milanovi\u0107 reminded that the conditions in which Croatia was first defended, and then liberated, were difficult and unprecedented. \u201cRecognized yet unrecognised, assisted yet left in the lurch, encouraged yet under constant threats with sanctions and international measures. One had to survive that,\u201d said the President, pointing out that no other European nation \u2013 until the Ukrainian war \u2013 went through such suffering, challenges and tests. \u201cThat\u2019s something one should be proud of, but also aware of the exceptional and outstanding circumstances and success which that victory represented,\u201d concluded President Milanovi\u0107, congratulating Croatian Homeland War defenders on the well-deserved decorations of the Republic of Croatia that he presented to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A special unit of the General Staff of the Croatian Army, the \u201cMatija Vla\u010di\u0107\u201d Battalion, was decorated with the Order of Nikola \u0160ubi\u0107 Zrinski for bravery and a deed of valour in the Homeland War. The decoration and emblem were accepted by Battalion Commander Ante Maksan and Battalion member \u017deljko Ravli\u0107.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Order of Ban Jela\u010di\u0107 was posthumously awarded to Zoran \u0160ipo\u0161 and Zvonko \u010cukelj for their extraordinary successful command of units of the Croatian Armed Forces, and for extraordinary military services in their organization and development. For participating and being seriously wounded in the Homeland War, Zoran \u0160orli, Ivan Jazvi\u0107 and Bernardin Jelini\u0107 were decorated with the Order of the Croatian Cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For extraordinary services to the Republic of Croatia in a state of war, the Order of the Croatian Trefoil was posthumously bestowed upon Violeta Antoli\u0107, Anto Jakovljevi\u0107, \u0110uro Sabado\u0161, Dragutin Bed\u017eula, Damir Pavi\u010di\u0107, Dubravko Ivankovi\u0107, Ljubomir \u0110uki\u0107, Dra\u017een Vrtari\u0107, Josip Osre\u010dki, Jozo \u010cavar, Stjepan Sari\u0107, Verica Marun\u010dek, Zlatko Zupkovi\u0107, Zoran Marun\u010dek, Stanko Plo\u010dkini\u0107, An\u0111elko Kralj, Antun Slivka and Jure Bu\u0161ljeta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For extraordinary contributions to the development and standing of the Republic of Croatia, the Order of the Croatian Interlace was posthumously bestowed upon Josip \u0106aleta, Mirko Bro\u0111anac, Antun Braovac, Davor Kova\u010di\u0107, Berislav Medi\u0107, Damir Stojanovi\u0107, Danijel \u0160iki\u0107, Drago Bubnji\u0107, Ivan Ivani\u0161evi\u0107, Jelena Vu\u010deti\u0107, Josip Kolari\u0107, Marinko Mami\u0107, Marko Dragi\u010devi\u0107, Sini\u0161a Podhra\u0161ki, Violeta Grdi\u0107, Zvonimir Br\u010di\u0107, Ivica Grgi\u0107, Snje\u017eana Patko, Tomica Svalina, Mario Dadi\u0107, Bo\u0161ko Peri\u0107, Dragutin Per\u0161a, Predrag Petri\u0107, Pavao Stipanovi\u0107, Kazimir Stjepanovi\u0107, Zlatko Stoji\u0107, Miroslav Vr\u010dkovi\u0107, Bari\u0161a Marevi\u0107 and Branko Bartolec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Homeland War Memorial Medal was awarded to Danijel \u0160iki\u0107, An\u0111elko Musi\u0107, Bla\u017e Naletili\u0107 and Nenad \u0160ipo\u0161 for their participation in the Homeland War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wartime Commander of the \u201cMatija Vla\u010di\u0107\u201d Battalion Ante Maksan expressed gratitude for the decorations on behalf of those who received the awards, pointing out that the Battalion members and all the decorated Croatian defenders are proud and honoured to have the opportunity to come to the Office of the President and receive the decorations. \u201cToday, you made it possible for us to gather together again after so many years, to see how many of us are still alive. Thank you for that,\u201d said wartime Commander Ante Maksan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
