The President of the Republic Zoran Milanovi\u0107 met with representatives of volunteer fire departments from Vara\u017edin, Koprivnica and Kri\u017eevci, which are celebrating 160 years (the Vara\u017edin Volunteer Fire Department) and 150 years of work (the Koprivnica Volunteer Fire Department and the Kri\u017eevci Volunteer Fire Department) next year, respectively. A delegation of the Croatian Firefighting Association headed by Chief Firefighting Commander Slavko Tucakovi\u0107 also attended the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The representatives of volunteer fire departments informed President Milanovi\u0107 about their plans for marking the anniversaries, which are important for firefighting in Croatia, and invited him to attend the anniversary celebrations. The first Croatian volunteer fire brigade in Vara\u017edin, known as the \u201cPrvi hrvatski dobrovoljni vatrogasni zbor u Vara\u017edinu,\u201d was established on 17 June 1864 and was the first volunteer fire brigade on the territory of Croatia and in Southeast Europe. The representatives of DVD Vara\u017edin therefore emphasized that they consider themselves as the \u201ccradle of modern Croatian volunteer firefighting.\u201d In the Kri\u017eevci and Koprivnica areas, the first volunteer fire departments were founded in 1874 and they were among the first in Croatia, as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to discussing the significant role of volunteer fire departments in Croatia\u2019s history, the meeting in the Office of the President also discussed the present-day importance of volunteer firefighters. It was mentioned, in this context, that firefighters are always among the first to respond in the event of natural disasters, such as fires, earthquakes or floods. Chief Firefighting Commander Tucakovi\u0107 informed President Milanovi\u0107 about the firefighters\u2019 activities during this year\u2019s major storm, which affected a large part of Croatia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Milanovi\u0107 expressed his satisfaction with the firefighters\u2019 engagement and conduct, underscoring that he is glad to see that the fire service is functioning well in these situations. The need to encourage children and young people to become more involved in the work of volunteer fire departments was discussed, too. As Commander Tucakovi\u0107 pointed out, the fire departments are doing well in terms of equipment, but the lack of manpower is expected to be the main issue in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attending the meeting with the President of the Republic, alongside the Chief Firefighting Commander, were the Commander of the Koprivnica Volunteer Fire Department Danijel Matijakovi\u0107, Secretary of the Koprivnica Volunteer Fire Department Kre\u0161imir Juratovi\u0107, President of the Kri\u017eevci Volunteer Fire Department Natalija Radotovi\u0107-Maksi\u0107, Vice President of the Kri\u017eevci Volunteer Fire Department Ivan Matosovi\u0107, Member of the Governing Board of the Kri\u017eevci Volunteer Fire Department Bo\u017eidar \u0160tubelj, President of the \u201cPrvi hrvatski dobrovoljni vatrogasni zbor u Vara\u017edinu\u201d Volunteer Fire Brigade Radovan Martinec, Vice President of the \u201cPrvi hrvatski dobrovoljni vatrogasni zbor u Vara\u017edinu\u201d Volunteer Fire Brigade Roman Ver\u0161i\u0107, Secretary of the \u201cPrvi hrvatski dobrovoljni vatrogasni zbor u Vara\u017edinu\u201d Volunteer Fire Brigade Jasenka Kra\u0161, Secretary in the Cabinet of the  Chief Firefighting Commander Hrvoje Ostovi\u0107 and the Spokesperson in the Cabinet of the Chief Firefighting Commander Nina Franceti\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Milanovi\u0107 was accompanied by Dragan Lozan\u010di\u0107, Adviser to the President of the Republic for National Security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
