The President of the Republic Zoran Milanovi\u0107 received today young women scientists from the field of natural sciences who are this year’s winners of recognitions and the award of the National L’Or\u00e9al-UNESCO \u201cFor Women in Science\u201c Programme: Andrea Lon\u010darevi\u0107 Vrabec from the University of Zagreb\u2019s Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology; Antonella Bari\u0161i\u0107 Kula\u0161 from the University of Zagreb\u2019s Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing; Mija Jurilj Sajko from the Sisters of Charity Teaching Hospital and Petra Male\u0161 from Ru\u0111er Bo\u0161kovi\u0107 Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organizers of the award are L’Or\u00e9al Adria and the Croatian Commission for UNESCO at the Ministry of Culture and Media. The award has been presented under the auspices of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts for the 19th<\/sup> consecutive year. In addition to the awarded women scientists, the meeting in the Office of the President of the Republic was attended by members of the committee and the organizers of the programme, who presented the National L’Or\u00e9al-UNESCO \u201cFor Women in Science\u201d Programme to President Milanovi\u0107, emphasizing that it is unique in its propositions and strict criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President of the Programme’s selection committee, Academician Zvonko Kusi\u0107, said that the four winners were selected among 68 applicants according to the strictest international selection criteria for scientific disciplines. He added that women in Croatia are still less involved in scientific research projects, despite the fact that over 50 percent of doctorates in science in Croatia are awarded to women, and emphasized that this award also has a symbolic role as a role model and incentive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the National L’Or\u00e9al-UNESCO \u201cFor Women in Science\u201d Programme, since 2006, 74 Croatian women scientists in the final stages of obtaining their doctorates in the field of natural sciences, including interdisciplinary fields, have been awarded. The programme has become a permanent and recognizable symbol of support for young women scientists in Croatia who enrich the scientific community with their dedicated work and effort, encouraging and stimulating them to pursue their scientific careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with the awarded young women scientists and the President of the Selection Committee of the National L’Or\u00e9al-UNESCO \u201cFor Women in Science\u201d Programme, Academician Zvonko Kusi\u0107, were the members of the Selection Committee: Academician Vida Demarin; Academician Goran Durn; Prof. Helena Jasna Mencer, PhD; Prof. \u0110ur\u0111ica Ugarkovi\u0107, PhD; Prof. Marica Ivankovi\u0107, PhD, and Prof. Leandra Vranje\u0161 Marki\u0107, PhD, and the Programme\u2019s organizers Secretary General and Head of the UNESCO Service of the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia, Rut Carek; and General Manager of L’Or\u00e9al for the Adria Balkan Region, Maximiliano Frenza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside President Republic was the Adviser to the President of the Republic for Education Jadranka \u017darkovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
