The President of the Republic Zoran Milanovi\u0107 today received a delegation of the Vara\u017edin Civic Guard on the occasion of the 275th<\/sup> anniversary of this historic unit, an important element of Vara\u017edin\u2019s civic tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bojan Hegedi\u0107, President and Commander of the Vara\u017edin Civic Guard, informed President Milanovi\u0107 about the historical circumstances in which the Guard was formed. Its origins are linked to the reforms of Empress Maria Theresa, who in the mid-18th<\/sup> century confirmed, through the city statute, the unit of armed Vara\u017edin craftsmen, merchants, and other professionals with citizenship rights, prescribing its status and duties. For this reason, the year 1750 is considered the official founding year of the Vara\u017edin Civic Guard, then known as the \u201cImperial and Royal Chartered Civic Company.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the Guard is one of Vara\u017edin\u2019s most recognizable symbols. Since 2017, it has also held the status of an intangible cultural asset of the Republic of Croatia \u2013 the only such designation originating from the city of Vara\u017edin. The Guard has more than 50 members, 33 of whom wear uniforms and take part in ceremonies, official events, parades, honour guard duties, and the firing of ceremonial rifle salutes. Beyond its ceremonial role, the Guard contributes to the preservation of local tradition, promotes education about Vara\u017edin\u2019s history, and enhances the city\u2019s tourism offerings. Throughout the centuries, it has symbolized honour, order, and civic pride, it was noted during the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to Commander Bojan Hegedi\u0107 and the Deputy Mayor of the City of Vara\u017edin and Member of Parliament, Miroslav Markovi\u0107, the meeting at the Office of the President of the Republic was attended by officers, non-commissioned officers, and guardsmen of the Vara\u017edin Civic Guard: Hrvoje Selec, Marko Mumlek, Marin Ba\u0161i\u0107, Nenad Glava\u010d, Darko \u0160mic, Igor Peharda, Juraj Mrazovi\u0107, Dubravko Nagy, Tomislav Vusi\u0107, Toni \u010cakmazovi\u0107, Tomislav Dmitrovi\u0107, and Marko Ljubovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Milanovi\u0107 was accompanied by the Adviser to the President of the Republic for Local and Regional Self-Government Relations Nik\u0161a Peronja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
