The President of the Republic Zoran Milanovi\u0107 received today a delegation of the Club of Wartime Commanders and senior officers of the Association of Veterans of the 5th<\/sup> Guards Brigade \u201cHawks\u201d who presented to him a Monograph of the Croatian Army\u2019s 5th<\/sup> Guards Brigade \u201cHawks\u201d. It is the last in a series of Defence Ministry monographs published as part of the Edition of Monographs of Military and Police Units of the Croatian Armed Forces during the 1991-1996 Homeland War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis monograph is a permanent record of the time of Croatian pride and glory, it is a token of gratitude to all the Hawks of Slavonia, my combatants, sisters and brothers in arms, for their contribution to the development of the 5th<\/sup> Guards Brigade and the defence and liberation of our Homeland. The Monograph is a memorial of the contribution and sacrifice of my generation, as well as a reminder to all future generations to continue to defend and build \u201cOur Beautiful\u201d with the same passion. The war service record of the Hawks of Slavonia was as clean as a whistle: honourable, proud and distinguished, military in accordance with all international conventions\u201d, retired Major General and Commander of the 5th<\/sup> Guards Brigade Ivan Kapular said among others presenting the Monograph to President Milanovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the meeting of the goal and purpose of writing the Monograph of the Croatian Army\u2019s 5th<\/sup> Guards Brigade \u201cHawks\u201d were retired Major General \u017divko Budimir, Club president; and Colonel Mijo Ko\u017ei\u0107, editor in chief and head of the Team of experts who prepared the Monograph. They pointed out that, until now, of all guards brigades only the 5th<\/sup> Guards Brigade did not have its monograph. \u201cLet this monograph not merely be a collection of memories, but a guide for new generations to preserve tradition and unity with pride and patriotism. That it never be forgotten who the Hawks of Slavonia were and may forever the victorious war service record in the Homeland War be recorded\u201d, Colonel Ko\u017ei\u0107 noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Monograph encompasses the period from the formation of the Vukovar Veterans\u2019 Brigade on 16 February 1992 until the end of the Homeland War. It portrays the Brigade\u2019s war service record from its tasks at Kupres, to its departure for the Southern Battlefield and finally its participation in all operations for the liberation of Croatia: Flash, Wall, Summer of \u201995, Phoenix and Storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Monograph has 732 pages and lists all 6,202 wartime members of the \u201cHawks\u201d. It contains 713 photographs. We reviewed more than ten thousand documents and declassified archival material for about 650 documents. We created military-topographic maps for each operation. We consolidated all the decorations, awards and insignia of the Brigade\u201d, Colonel Ko\u017ei\u0107 explained, and concluded that the Monograph is \u201cour debt to the past and a gift to the future\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Established on 5 October 1992 in Vinkovci, the 5th<\/sup> Guards Brigade \u201cHawks\u201d was made up of mostly units from Slavonia, mainly members of the Vukovar 204th<\/sup> Brigade, the 108th<\/sup>  Slavonski Brod Brigade, the 109th<\/sup> Vinkovci Brigade, the 3rd<\/sup> Nova Gradi\u0161ka Company, the 122nd<\/sup> \u0110akovo Brigade, the 123rd<\/sup> Po\u017eega Brigade, the 132nd<\/sup> Na\u0161ice Brigade and members of the 3rd<\/sup> Guards Brigade as well as other Guards units. During the Homeland War, 89 members of the 5th<\/sup> Guards Brigade were killed and more than 300 members were injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the presentation of the Monograph, a film on the \u201cHawks\u201d was shown, and retired Major General Kapular presented the Monograph of the Croatian Army\u2019s 5th<\/sup> Guards Brigade \u201cHawks\u201d to President Milanovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the delegation of the Club of Wartime Commanders and senior officers of the Association of Veterans of the 5th<\/sup> Guards Brigade \u201cHawks\u201d were the following: the Commander of the 5th<\/sup> Guards Brigade \u201cHawks\u201d, retired Major General Ivan Kapular; Club president retired Major General \u017divko Budimir; Club vice-president retired Lieutenant Colonel Drago Ad\u017eaga; Club secretary retired Major of the Guards Brigade Zlatko Mihin; Commander of the 4th<\/sup> Infantry Battalion of the 5th<\/sup> Guards Brigade \u201cHawks\u201d in the 1993-1995 period retired Brigadier General Mladen Mikol\u010devi\u0107; members of the Club\u2019s presidency: Franjo Bari\u010devi\u0107, Marin Pi\u0161oni\u0107 and Zdravko Nikoli\u0107; Commander of the Armoured Battalion of the Croatian Army\u2019s 5th<\/sup> Guards Brigade \u201cHawks\u201d  Ivica Jele\u010devi\u0107; Club members: Mario \u0160varcmajer, \u017deljko \u0110erek, Drago Bla\u017eevi\u0107, Ante Elez, Franjo \u0106orluka, Ivan Re\u010di\u0107, Borislav Lehki, Marko Dere\u017eanin, Ivan Ivani\u0161evi\u0107, Martin Cruickshank, Biljana Bozaroski, Sanja Samard\u017eija-Dubac, Ana Jaki\u010di\u0107, Anita Tunji\u0107, daughter of Vinko Pinjuh, last member of the Croatian Army\u2019s 5th<\/sup> Guards Brigade \u201cHawks\u201d killed in the Homeland War (10 November 1995).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accompanying the members of the Club of Wartime Commanders and senior officers of the Association of Veterans of the 5th<\/sup> Guards Brigade \u201cHawks\u201d were representatives of the team of experts who prepared the Monograph: editor in chief and head of the team of experts Colonel Mijo Ko\u017ei\u0107, Colonel Petar Matanovi\u0107, Colonel Dra\u017een Galovi\u0107, Colonel Sandi Kne\u017eevi\u0107, Lieutenant Colonel Mirko Mihi\u0107, Lieutenant Colonel Ivica Bara\u0107, Sergeant Major Mladen Stankovi\u0107, and Sergeant Major Dra\u017een Horvat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside President Milanovi\u0107 was the Adviser to the President of the Republic for Homeland War Veterans Marijan Marekovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
