The President of the Republic Zoran Milanović received today a delegation from the Old Church Slavonic Institute – the central Croatian academic institution for researching the Croatian Glagolitic script and Glagolitism. The occasion for the meeting was the International Scientific Conference “11 Centuries of Croatian Glagolitism (925-2025)”, which was held in Zagreb under the patronage of the President of the Republic.

The International Scientific Conference on Croatian Glagolitism was held to mark the 1100th anniversary of the first documented mention of the Croatian Glagolitic script found in the letters of Pope John X of 925 and in the decrees of the First Church Council of Split of the same year. The conference was held from 8 to 10 October and brought together 50 domestic and foreign scholars of the Croatian Glagolitic script, who gave 46 presentations over the course of three days.

Representatives of the Old Church Slavonic Institute acquainted President Milanović with the themes of the conference, emphasizing that they discussed the beginnings of Croatian Glagolitism, the most famous events and achievements in its history, prominent Glagolitic writers and scholars of Glagolitic, and ways to preserve and promote the Glagolitic heritage.

At the meeting there was discussion of the importance of the Glagolitic script for the Croatian identity, as well as the need and possibilities for popularizing this ancient Croatian script. Scientists from the Old Church Slavonic Institute pointed out that interest in the Glagolitic script is greater today than it was 20 or 30 years ago, even in schools in parts of Croatia where the Glagolitic script has no tradition.

In the delegation of the Old Church Slavonic Institute attending the meeting in the Office of the President of the Republic were: acting director and member of the Organizing Committee Sandra Požar; president of the Organizing Committee Ana Šimić; senior research associate Vida Vukoja; research associates of the Old Church Slavonic Institute: Josip Galić, Kristian Paskojević, Igor Medić and Josip Mihaljević; assistant Janja Dora Ivančić, and secretary Divna Gubić.

Alongside President Milanović were the Special Adviser to the President of the Republic for Culture Zdravko Zima, and the Adviser to the President of the Republic for Foreign and European Policy Neven Pelicarić.
