President Milanović Attends Opening of Chess Tournament in Honour of Deceased Journalist and Publicist Sanjin Španović
The President of the Republic Zoran Milanović attended today the opening of the 1st Memorial Charity Chess Tournament “Sanjin Španović” organized by Dinamo Business Club and Dinamo Foundation “Nema predaje” (No Surrender) in conjunction with Croatian Chess Grandmaster Alojzije Janković.
In his address, President Milanović recalled his acquaintance with the recently deceased journalist, Sanjin Španović. “I knew him when he was a political journalist in City Hall covering city and state politics while I was president of the SDP Party. He was an especially dear, polite and warm young man who quickly abandoned political journalism realizing it was a job for people who could stomach certain things. We kept in contact, talked occasionally”, President Milanović added, saying that news about his death shocked him. “In honour of Špan and dear people like him, frail, subtle, human butterflies that were never caterpillars only butterflies. Špan, may this be your day, keep on flying!”, President Milanović said at the opening of the 1st Memorial Charity Chess Tournament “Sanjin Španović”.
The tournament was held in memory of the recently deceased journalist and publicist, Sanjin Španović, who was also the author of the book “Zeko – biografija Velimira Zajeca” (Zeko – A Biography of Velimir Zajec). The tournament is humanitarian in nature as all proceeds will go to the Dinamo Foundation “Nema predaje”, which directs funds towards the groups in society most in need and encourages the development of young sports talents.
Addressing the gathering at the opening of the 1st Memorial Charity Chess Tournament “Sanjin Španović” in addition to President Milanović were Croatian Chess Grandmaster Alojzije Janković, member of the Management Board of the GNK Dinamo Foundation “Nema predaje“ Juraj Čošić, honorary president of GNK Dinamo Velimir Zajec, and president of GNK Dinamo Zvonimir Boban.
Alongside President Milanović was the Commissioner of the President for Sports Tomislav Paškvalin.
