Easter Message from the President of the Republic of Croatia Zoran Milanović
Easter – the greatest Christian holiday – is being marked at a time when it seems as if darkness has descended over the entire world. Indeed, the world as we knew it until recently is rapidly collapsing, and the reality in which we live is marked by insecurity, wars and uncertainty. People are, with good reason, fearful of an even darker future, as reason and dialogue are retreating before force and threats.
In such a reality, it is difficult – but all the more necessary and important – to promote faith in the triumph of light over darkness and hope for a new beginning, as has been done for centuries through faith in Easter. Advocating peace instead of violence, forgiveness instead of revenge, and hope instead of fear is not only the mission of religious leaders, but also the duty of secular, elected officials. Indeed, today this is the first and most important task of all of us who are obliged to care for the peace and security of the people who have placed their trust in us.
I have no doubt that Croatian people want a peaceful and secure life for themselves and their children, and a Croatia that will never again be exposed to suffering and war. That is precisely why, in our relations with others – both as a state and as individuals – we must seek and offer reason and dialogue as the only way out of the darkness of today’s world.
We cannot remain silent about the suffering of people affected by wars around the world, nor can we be indifferent to the injustices and hardships faced by people in Croatia. But it is not enough to speak – concern for others must be shown through actions that provide hope and encouragement. When concern for humanity prevails, life and human dignity will triumph – values that lie at the heart of both the Christian faith and the secular principles to which we aspire.
I wish everyone in Croatia, as well as Croats abroad, a happy and blessed Easter, and that they spend the holiday in peace and joy with their families and friends.
