President of the Republic Zoran Milanović Lays Wreath at Memorial to Twelve Policemen Killed in Borovo
On the eve of the 30th anniversary of the tragic death of twelve members of the Vinkovci Special Police Unit who were massacred by Serbian paramilitary units on 2 May 1991 in Borovo, formerly Borovo Selo, President Milanović stated: “They were the Croatian armed forces. They were ambushed when they came to free their captured member, friend, companion and fellow combatant. They were met as if they came to kill. They didn’t come to kill or set fires. This is a horrific event whose responsibility has yet to be established, and probably never will.
After laying a wreath President Milanović addressed reporters and explained that today he wished to speak to the Head of the Municipality of Borovo, member of the SDSS (Independent Democratic Serbian Party), but was told that he hasn’t got the time because the campaign is underway: “I came here and he’s hiding behind blinds. I came to tell him that the monument to Šoškočanin here bothers me, because it is a monument to a killer who drowned in the Danube. It has been here for years and is actually a provocation and an insult to people. If I was able to fight for the rights of Serbs, then I can ask him what he’s done about this matter. Cemeteries aren’t private, but public property”, President Milanović said and added that obviously they don’t want to remove the monument to Šoškočanin because the tension suits someone. “That’s my question to the Head of the Municipality”, President Milanović stated.
Attending the wreath-laying ceremony along with the President of the Republic was the Chief of the General Staff of the Croatian Armed Forces Admiral Robert Hranj and the Special Adviser to the President of the Republic for Homeland War Veterans Marijan Mareković.
