The President of Republic Zoran Milanović talked to Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković today related to tomorrow’s meeting of the European Council.

Prime Minister Plenković informed President Milanović of his inability to attend the European Council meeting, and suggested that President Milanović represents the Republic of Croatia. In reply, President Milanović suggested that the Republic of Slovenia represents the Republic of Croatia as an example of good-neighbourly relations, which had been the case earlier in similar circumstances.

Prime Minister Plenković reminded that such a practice existed in the past when the Republic of Slovenia represented the Republic of Croatia and vice versa, and agreed it should be so this time as well.

Pursuant to Article 141 b of the Constitution of the Republic of Croatia, the Government and the President of the Republic of Croatia represent the Republic of Croatia in the Council and in the European Council in accordance with their Constitutional powers. Given the nature of the work of the European Council, the President of the Republic represents the Republic of Croatia exceptionally when it deals with issues of defence and national security.
