The President of the Republic Zoran Milanović attended a celebration marking the 145th anniversary of the Croatian Firefighting Association, on the occasion of which he congratulated the firefighters, telling them there is no nobler and more dangerous job than firefighting.

“In this line of work, Croatia is the upper elite. We are good because of our tradition and because of investments. We are also good due to the latest measure by which firefighting became part of the public administration, something that perhaps should have been done earlier. That was a good decision,” President Milanović said in his address at the event.

He underscored that as a politician and formerly as the Prime Minister, he grew aware of the importance, boldness and bravery of people involved in firefighting, emphasizing that there are a total of some 1,800 volunteer fire brigades in Croatia. “These associations of local men and women are so often unjustly the butt of a joke, since those who tell them have no clue what they are talking about. Croatia has at least 400 municipalities that are constantly the target of administrative, legal and conceptual tutors who claim there are too many. Why don’t they say there are too many volunteer associations? There are not too many of them, just as there are not too many municipalities. Volunteer fire associations are needed just as much as the municipalities are needed,” President Milanović concluded.

Speaking at the 145th anniversary celebration of the Croatian Firefighting Association apart from President Milanović were Chief Fire Commander Slavko Tucaković, the President of the Croatian Firefighting Association, Member of the Croatian Parliament and envoy of the Speaker of the Croatian Parliament Ante Sanader and Prime Minister Andrej Plenković.

Adviser to the President of the Republic for Defense and National Security Dragan Lozančić and Adviser to the President of the Republic for Human Rights and Civil Society Melita Mulić were alongside President Milanović.
