President Milanović Attends 30th Anniversary of 50th Independent Battalion of Croatian National Guard Virovitica

The President of the Republic and Commander in Chief of the Croatian Armed Forces Zoran Milanović took part in the 30th anniversary celebration of the founding of the 50th independent battalion of the Croatian National Guard Virovitica.

In tribute to the fallen Croatian defenders, President MIlanović laid a wreath and lit a candle at the Memorial to the fallen Homeland War defenders at the cemetery in Virovitica. Accompanying President Milanović at the wreath-laying ceremony was the Special Adviser of the President of the Republic for Homeland War Veterans Marijan Mareković.

Laying a wreath at the Memorial to the fallen Homeland War defenders on behalf of the Club of the 50th independent battalion of the Croatian National Guard Virovitica and the Association of Volunteer Defenders and Veterans of the Homeland War was the President of the Association of Volunteer Defenders and Veterans of the Homeland War Đuro Dečak, the president of the Virovitica branch of the Association of Volunteer Defenders and Veterans of the Homeland War Vlado Paurić and the President of the Club of the 50th independent battalion of the Croatian National Guard Virovitica.

Founded on 28 June 1991, the 50th independent battalion of the Croatian National Guard was the first armed unit of Croatian defenders in the Virovitica area headed by its commander Đuro Dečak. As soon as it was founded, the battalion assumed defensive tasks and surrounded the barracks in Virovitica and the borderline watchtowers. They participated in many defensive and liberating actions as well in the areas of Pounje, Osijek, Pakrac, Daruvar, Grubišno Polje, Slatina and elsewhere.
