The President of the Republic Zoran Milanović attended a formal session of the Vela Luka Municipal Council on the island of Korčula.

In his address at the formal session, the President of the Republic looked back on the process of building the Pelješac Bridge, which will also make the island town of Vela Luka more accessible. He recalled that the preparations for the construction of the bridge lasted for almost 16 years. According to the President, this is not such a long time for a project of that scale.

“Some things are talked about for a longer time and nothing is done. It has been 16 years since somebody put the Pelješac Bridge in their platform in 2005. Croatia waited much longer for some equally important or more important things. It is good the bridge has been built,” said President Milanović.

The President of the Republic emphasized that although Vela Luka is a small community, it is working hard to attract European funds. He told its residents to make use of the EU money in the future “because it is our money and for me it is the measure of success of the local self-government.”

“Use European funds, because it is the only rationale for being in the European Union. This EU money is our money and theoretically there is double the amount that we pay in. That should be used,” concluded the President of the Republic.

The programme of the formal session included a presentation of the future projects in the municipality. The Head of the Municipality of Vela Luka Katarina Gugić and the President of the Vela Luka Municipal Council Zoran Manestar also presented public awards to meritorious individuals and associations and to the most successful athletes.

Attending the formal session alongside President Milanović were the Head of the Cabinet of the President of the Republic Bartol Šimunić and the President’s Adviser for Human Rights and Civil Society Melita Mulić.
