President Milanović Attends Opening of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly

The President of the Republic Zoran Milanović attended in New York on Tuesday the opening of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. This year’s session of the UN General Assembly, which is marking 80 years of work, is being held under the theme “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights”.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the President of the UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock delivered their opening speeches to the gathered heads of state and governments, members of the UN. Among the first speakers at the session were the President of Brazil Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the President of the United States of America Donald Trump and the President of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. President Milanović will address the UN General Assembly on Wednesday.

The debate at the session of the UN General Assembly served to present views on all current world crises and wars, as well as on the challenges faced by the member states. The need to reform the UN was also discussed, which was proposed by the current Secretary-General with his UN80 initiative.

Alongside President Milanović at the opening of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly were members of the Croatian delegation: the Head of the Office of the President Orsat Miljenić, the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Gordan Grlić Radman, the Head of the Cabinet of the President Bartol Šimunić, the Adviser to the President for Foreign and European Policy Neven Pelicarić, and the Deputy Ambassador in the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Croatia to the UN Hrvoje Ćurić Hrvatinić.
