On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of “Operation Plitvice” at Plitvice Lakes, the President of the Republic laid a wreath at the Memorial to Josip Jović, the first Croatian police officer to have been killed in the Homeland War.

“Thirty years have passed since the death of Josip Jović and of a display of courage bordering with insanity at the time making everything else fade. A small group of young people, who weren’t professionals or skilled with weapons, came here aware that they could confront a much more powerful enemy, stay here forever and never go back to Zagreb. As time goes by, this courage is greater, it simply outshines us and it’s even harder for me to comprehend today than at that time. Eternal glory and thanks to our fallen Josip Jović who didn’t live to see the Croatian freedom they fought for here, for freedom, for the Constitution, for democracy, for Croatian affiliation to Europe and probably nothing else at that moment”, President Milanović stated in his address.

“Everything else is history, and this is where history begins”, President Milanović concluded.

Also attending the wreath-laying ceremony with the President of the Republic was the Chief of the General Staff of the Croatian Armed Forces Admiral Robert Hranj, the Commander of the Croatian Army Major General Boris Šerić and the Special Adviser to the President of the Republic of Croatia for Homeland War Veterans Marijan Mareković.
