President Milanović, Patron of “Vukovar ‘91 – Thirty Years Later” Academic Conference, Meets with its Organizers

The President of the Republic Zoran Milanović received a delegation of the Ivo Pilar Institute of Social Sciences and Catholic University of Croatia composed of Željko Holjevac, Director of the Ivo Pilar Institute of Social Sciences, Željko Tanjić, Rector of Catholic University of Croatia and Dražen Živić, Assistant Director of the Ivo Pilar Institute of Social Sciences.

The delegation members informed President Milanović about the agenda of the three-day academic conference “Vukovar ‘91 – Thirty Years Later,” which will be held in November in Vukovar on the occasion of marking Homeland War Victims Remembrance Day and 1991 Vukovar Victims Remembrance Day. The theme of this year’s conference is “Vukovar ’91: A gift in return for freedom – identities, recollections, history.” Researchers, experts, witnesses and admirers of Vukovar from Croatia and abroad were invited to participate in the conference and present 21 scientific papers. It was pointed out at the meeting with the President that international participation is a unique feature of this year’s conference, since guests were invited from abroad.

The academic conferences Vukovar ‘91 have been held for the 24th consecutive year, since 2006 regularly in Vukovar, and they were organized by the Ivo Pilar Institute of Social Sciences. Later, Catholic University of Croatia also joined in as the conference co-organizer. The Director of the Ivo Pilar Institute also used the occasion of the meeting to acquaint the President of the Republic with the activities of the Institute, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

President Milanović, who is the patron of the Vukovar ‘91 conference, welcomed the organizers’ efforts to systematically discuss and shed light, through a professional and academic approach, on the truth about the role of the city of Vukovar in the Homeland War and the establishment of an independent Republic of Croatia.

Attending the meeting alongside President Milanović were Adviser to the President of the Republic for Education Jadranka Žarković and Special Adviser to the President of the Republic for Homeland War Veterans Marijan Mareković.
