President Milanović Receives Mathematical Olympiad Medal Winners

The President of the Republic Zoran Milanović received the award winning secondary school students who took part in the recent mathematical Olympiads, the International Mathematical Olympiad and the Middle European Mathematical Olympiad.

The International Mathematical Olympiad is the most important secondary school competition for high school students in solving demanding non-standard mathematical tasks with approximately 110 countries around the world participating, and each team has the right to enter 6 contestants. This year’s International Mathematical Olympiad was held on 19 and 20 July. Attending the meeting with President Milanović were gold medal winner from the XV Gymnasium Zagreb Bernard Inkret, silver medal winner from the XV Gymnasium Zagreb Ivan Vojvodić, and bronze medal winners from Andrija Mohorovičić Rijeka Gymnasium Andrej Čizmarević, Dorijan Lendvaj from XV Gymnasium Zagreb and Jakov Ljubičić from Lucijan Vranjanin Gymnasium Zagreb.

The Middle European Mathematical Olympiad has been held for the past 15 years and 10 member states participate regularly: Austria, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Hungary, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland and Croatia with the possibility for the competition organizer to invite a guest team. Besides individual competitions in which each student resolves the tasks individually, at this mathematical competition there is also a team competition in which national teams resolve the tasks jointly, and medals are won by the members of the three first place teams.

Attending the meeting with President Milanović were the following participants of the Middle European Mathematical Olympiad: XV Gymnasium Zagreb student Patrick Pavić, individual silver medal winner and team bronze medal winner; Franje Petrić Gymnasium in Zadar student Stella Čolo, individual silver medal winner and team bronze medal winner; XV Gymnasium Zagreb student Namik Agić, individual silver medal winner and team bronze medal winner; XV Gymnasium Zagreb student Janko Bušelić, individual bronze medal winner and team bronze medal winner; First Gymnasium in Varaždin student Emanuel Tukač, individual bronze medal winner and team bronze medal winner;  and XV Gymnasium Zagreb student Petar Sruk, team bronze medal winner.

Along with the medal winners at the meeting in the Office of the President was the team leader for the Middle European Mathematical Olympiad Prof. Ilko Brnetić, PhD, who is one of the main organizers of the preparations of these two and other national teams, as well as the 15th Middle European Mathematical Olympiad in Zagreb. Also participating in the preparations and leading the teams as well as implementing the competition was a large number of teachers organized by the Croatian Mathematical Society, as well as mathematics students assembled in the Young Gifted Mathematicians “Marin Getaldić”.

Alongside President Milanović was the Head of the Cabinet of the President Bartol Šimunić and the Adviser to the President for Education Jadranka Žarković.
