At the invitation of the President of Montenegro Jakov Milatović, the President of the Republic of Croatia Zoran Milanović attended a ceremony marking Montenegro’s Statehood Day in Cetinje on Thursday evening. The event was also attended by the President of the Republic of Slovenia Nataša Pirc Musar and the European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos.

President Milatović thanked the Presidents of Croatia and Slovenia, as guests of honour, for their support of Montenegro’s European path and their contribution to strengthening good neighbourly relations. “Thank you for working together to preserve the friendship between Montenegro and Croatia. Your presence here reaffirms our shared commitment to strengthening the ties between our two countries,” President Milatović said during the ceremony.

“Relations between our two countries are good. For me, as for everyone in Croatia involved in public affairs, it is important that we have interlocutors in Montenegro, people with whom we can speak in a normal manner, as we do with most countries in the region,” President Milanović said earlier during his working visit to Montenegro. He also encouraged Montenegro to “continue its preparations for membership in the European Union while preserving its statehood.”

Ahead of the ceremony in Cetinje, President Milanović also met with the President of Slovenia Nataša Pirc Musar.
