The President of the Republic attended the formal session of the Town Council of the Town of Popovača on the occasion of Municipal Day and its patron Saint Aloysius Gonzaga.

“Your small, pretty and pleasant town is exactly what it should be. You fight for your rights, for your name to be heard, you fight for your wallet, and you do it through the European funds” President Milanović told the residents of Popovača on congratulating them on their Municipal Day. He emphasized that we should take better advantage of our membership in the European Union.

“It’s good to listen, to see where omissions were made and where there are opportunities, but what remains in the end: money that’s offered to all the other EU member states, especially to the less developed ones. That’s why when I visit every city and municipality in the country, the only criterion for me is whether we used up the last euro that was available. And for each euro that wasn’t absorbed, I’d like to know who’s responsible, not as the President but as a citizens”, the President noted. He underlined that we owe it to ourselves because otherwise we’re again part of some huge institution in which we have no influence.

“I’m saying this to you in order to indicate what I feel is crucial in this period when we’re still recovering from various transitions and traumas we experienced as a young society, yet an old and mature society, an old society in the sense of average age. We have to realize that we are where we are, and that things won’t change a great deal. Lonjsko Polje will not be inhabited by hundreds of thousands of new residents, hundreds of thousands of young new Croats will not be born”, President Milanović stated. He concluded that we must preserve our resources, manage them effectively and nurture the area we have.

Alongside President Milanović at the celebration of Popovača Municipal Day was the Adviser to the President for Human Rights and Civil Society Melita Mulić.
