President Milanović Receives International Junior Science Olympiad Medal Winners

The President of the Republic Zoran Milanović has received today at the Office of the President pupils who won medals at the 18th International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) and their mentors.

The International Junior Science Olympiad was organized from the United Arab Emirates on 12-21 December 2021 in hybrid form, with 290 pupils from 59 countries taking part in the competition. Participants solved tasks in their home countries and pupils from Croatia won two silver and four bronze medals. The silver medal winners are Karlo Ahel from the Andrija Mohorovičić Gymnasium in Rijeka and Roko Marić from the Fifteenth Gymnasium in Zagreb. The bronze medal winners are Ema Novak from the Josip Slavenski Gymnasium in Čakovec, Kim Radešić from the Pula Gymnasium, Luka Duplančić from the Fifteenth Gymnasium in Zagreb and Karlo Domijan from the First Sušak Croatian Gymnasium in Rijeka.

The pupils prepared for the competition at the departments of chemistry, physics and biology of the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Science. The mentors who selected and trained the pupils, arranged laboratories and translated assignments for the competition are all employees of the Faculty of Science: Tajana Begović, Danijel Namjesnik, Andreja Lucić, Petra Cvjetko, Karolina Matejak Cvenić and Krešo Zadro. The students of the Faculty of Science assisted the mentors during the competition and in organizing the pupils’ free time. The pupils’ participation in the Olympiad was financed by the Ministry of Science and Education.

The Junior Science Olympiad medal winners also talked with President Milanović about their future education plans and all of them expressed the desire to enrol in university study programmes in Croatia. President Milanović extended his support to the pupils in their intention to stay in Croatia and contribute to scientific development with their knowledge.

Attending the meeting together with the International Junior Science Olympiad medal winners were the pupils’ mentors Krešo Zadro, Andreja Lucić and Tajana Begović. Special Adviser to the President of the Republic for the Economy Velibor Mačkić attended the meeting alongside President Milanović.
