The President of the Republic Zoran Milanović took part in a celebration marking the 100th anniversary of the Peasants’ Revolt in Proština, which refers to the crushing of a resistance by the peasants of Proština and the end of the Peasants’ Revolt in Proština. This was one of the first anti-fascist uprisings in Europe that took place in Istria, almost at the same time that a movement of miners started around the neighbouring area of Labin known as the Labin Republic.

The celebration marking the 100th anniversary of the Peasants’ Revolt in Proština against the terror of the Italian imperialist authorities was held at the Memorial to the Peasants’ Revolt in Proština, located in Marčana, where President Milanović laid a wreath and lit a candle.

In his address, the President of the Republic said that this event, about which little is known in Croatia, requires a history lesson, adding that outside of Istria little is known about it. He noted that today Istria can be proud of everything it has built and is building. “This is a tolerant, progressive, pleasant environment where people want to live, it’s become chic in a way. This status was not achieved quickly or easily,” President Milanović said.

He highlighted that the story of Istria is a success story, “of a success that lasts despite the coronavirus crisis, which will pass.” Today we have a beautiful, successful, tolerant, gentle, yet energetic place where good and ambitious people live,” the President concluded.

Alongside President Milanović at the celebration in Marčana marking the 100th anniversary of the Peasants’ Revolt in Proština was the Head of Cabinet of the President of the Republic of Croatia Bartol Šimunić and the Adviser to the President of the Republic for Human Rights and Civil Society Melita Mulić.
