The President of the Republic and Commander in Chief of the Croatian Armed Forces Zoran Milanović participated in the 30th anniversary ceremony marking the formation of the Prvi hrvatski redarstvenik [First Croatian Police Officer] wartime unit, on which occasion the President of the Republic presented the decoration ‘Order of Nikola Šubić Zrinski’ to the unit for deeds of valour demonstrated by its members in the Homeland War.

“In historical moments such as that, the fate of a large number of people lies in the hands of a few good people. You won the war; we all won the war together, especially those of you who carried arms,” President Milanović said in his speech at the ceremony.

“The war is over. I will not go into the motives, but after the war there were attempts to portray all of this as a joint criminal enterprise at the Hague Tribunal. That intention failed. We were also lucky that none of our generals – who were following political orders and those of the state leadership – were smeared and that they were ultimately not convicted of partaking in a joint criminal enterprise, which is one of the ugliest fabrications that were attempted to be made against Croatia. I don’t know who is to blame, but I am glad that this ill intention had failed,” the President of the Republic emphasized.

“It is up to us to be generous in peace and to show good faith. I am pleased to present the decoration to you and to the brigades from Bosnia and Herzegovina, which participated in liberating Croatia. That is our debt of honour – and my debt of honour to you and to them,” President Milanović concluded, extending his greetings to the families of the fallen and missing.
