The President of the Republic Zoran Milanović joined today residents in the northern city of Varaždin and their guests at the traditional festivity held on the occasion of International Workers’ Day, which is celebrated on the 1st of May, from where he extended his congratulations on International Workers’ Day to all Croatian citizens.

After a two-year break due to the pandemic, a May Day celebration with more than 150 participants was held at the Varaždin picnic area on the Drava River. The event was organized by the City of Varaždin and the Varaždin Tourist Board.

“The unions once went ‘bone to bone’, ‘iron to iron’ to the big employers. Now it’s dispersed and the unions are waging some kind of hybrid war because their rivals, the employers, are dispersed on many more positions. It’s more difficult to be a unionist than ever and a worker is someone who lives off their pay. Inflation affects such people the most. Food and energy prices are increasing the most,” said President Milanović, commenting on workers’ rights in Croatia.

In this respect, he added that the situation is quite serious “not only in Croatia but also in Germany, France and the USA. This has much less to do with workers’ rights and much more with geopolitics and the systemic global policy,” said President Milanović, adding that he chose to celebrate May Day in Varaždin because it is one of the largest events of its kind in Croatia.

Accompanied by the Mayor of Varaždin Neven Bosilj and his associates, President Milanović attended the event programme after which he fired the traditional May Day cannon, by pulling a cord, next to the lined-up Varaždin Civil Guard “Purgari.”

Head of the Cabinet of the President of the Republic Bartol Šimunić and Special Adviser to the President of the Republic for the Economy Velibor Mačkić were alongside President Milanović.
