President Milanović Meets with Representatives of Croatian Association for Cancer Research
The President of the Republic Zoran Milanović met today with representatives of the Croatian Association for Cancer Research, which brings together researchers and professionals who are active in medicine, biology, biochemistry and other scientific areas relevant in the field of cancer treatment.
The delegation, headed by Association President Dr. Sonja Levanat, informed President Milanović at the meeting in the Office of the President about the Association’s activities, which include a recently held conference. Namely, since 2010 they have organized a biennial conference with international participation, with the aim of connecting clinical and basic research and creating stronger ties among institutions and employees. To date, six conferences and one symposium with leading international lecturers were organized, and several workshops with numerous lectures were held. The high attendance at these events has proven to be extremely important for Croatian science and biomedicine, as they facilitate stronger ties between researchers and physicians, all with the aim of making better and more successful cancer treatment possible.
Members of the Association also discussed with President Milanović new findings in the field of cancer treatment, highlighting that new generations of medicines are the main focus of scientific discussion. In this regard, they pointed out the problems and challenges they face, which concern the issues of drug resistance and side effects of new generations of medicines. That is why the research we are conducting is very important for solving these issues, as our goal is for cancer to become a chronic disease with which people will be able to live, members of the Association told the President.
The Association is one of 14 national associations active under the umbrella organisation European Association for Cancer Research (EACR) and their main objective is to strengthen networks in the very broad field of cancer research nationally, internationally, with other associations and the EACR.
Participating in the meeting at the Office of the President, apart from the President of the Croatian Association for Cancer Research Dr. Sonja Levanat, were the Vice President of the Association Dr. Neda Slade, Secretary of the Association Dr. Petar Ozretić, Treasurer Dr. Maja Sabol, Executive Committee members Dr. Vesna Musani, Dr. Ivan Šamija and Dr. Sandra Sobočanec, as well as Association members Dr. Andreja Ambriović Ristov, Nikolina Piteša, Dr. Ignacija Vlašić, Matea Kurtović, Dr. Ana Tadijan, Dr. Tina Petrić, Josipa Čonkaš and Dr. Iva Škrinjar.
Adviser to the President of the Republic for Education Jadranka Žarković was alongside President Milanović.
